The game's appearance is much like the cartoon series and kids who watch the show on television will be impressed with the similarities. This is not terribly unmanageable but does get slightly annoying after the third time or so. The Phantom chases you and the only way to escape is to manage a sequence of buttons. Every so often, you run into the Phantom or some other potential suspect. At times, it was necessary to press the button three or four times to complete these simple tasks.įurther adding to the confusion are the random occurrences. I was unable to move them smoothly to the right spot or pick up the right item without some degree of difficulty.
I could never get Shaggy, Velma or any other character under my control to do as I wanted. The point-and-click interface used in the game tended to get on my nerves. The method with which South Peak Interactive designers chose to accomplish this is at times a bit confusing but also slightly entertaining.

The game is a mixed bag, succeeding in some areas while falling short in others. It tries to capitalize on the somewhat regained popularity of Scooby-Doo and the gang by placing them in a new adventure. The game has a password system which at the time this game was released was not all that unheard of. These all help add variety to the gameplay and stop things from getting tedious. These include a top down stealth section, puzzle-solving similar to Tetris and a kind of skateboarding level too. You do also have some other sections to keep things interesting. What is interesting is that while most of the game is made up of side-scrolling platforming. The game is rather easy, but to be fair this is a game that is made for kids. Most of the time you jump, kill enemies, collect coins and look for items.
Most levels have you play as Shaggy or Scooby, but you do also play as Daphne too. The music though really started to get on my nerves after a short while! More Than You Would Thinkįor the most part, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed is a platformer, but there is more than that on offer here. The overall presentation is nice enough, it is not going to blow you away, but at least the characters are nice, large and detailed. On the flip side, I can see kids getting bored and skipping most of it anyway. In one way this is fine as it is at least trying to have a coherent plot.

The plot is very close to the actual movie where the Scooby gang needs to stop a new villain from using monsters to take over the city.įor a game aimed at kids, this is way more text-heavy than you would think. I always wanted it to be a real monster and this is what Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed actually delivers. It is not a “best GBA game of all time” or anything like that, but as far as licensed games go, it is pretty decent. It is aimed at kids, but this is one of those “hidden gems” that is actually way better than you would think. I really enjoyed the two live-action Scooby-Doo movies that were released a decade or so ago and this game follows the second movie pretty well. Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed for the Game Boy Advance is based on the movie of the same name.
